The London Marathon is a long-distance running event held in London, United Kingdom, part of the World Marathon Majors. The event was first run on 29 March 1981 and has been held in the spring of every year since. Since 2010, the race has been sponsored by Virgin Money.
Every year, more than 40,000 people run the marathon through the streets of London.
Many runners wear absurd fancy dress: from a giant shoe and a London bus, to superheroes and a wide range of animals. Some race to attain personal goals, others to support their favorite charities.
All skill levels, from amateurs to competitive competitors, are welcome at the London Marathon. Chris Evans, Princess Beatrice, Gordon Ramsay, Agyness Dean, Jenson Button, and even astronaut Tim Peake at the International Space Station have all participated in the London Marathon as celebrities in the past.
