Founded in 1961 as a music festival at Caesarea’s ancient Roman amphitheater, the Israel Festival relocated to Jerusalem in the 1980s, quickly becoming Israel’s premier multi-disciplinary international festival. The Festival is held annually in Jerusalem and features world-class theatre, contemporary dance, classical music, and performance from around the world, as well as ground-breaking Israeli works and open-to-the-public street performances.
Attended by over 35,000 people the Israel Festival is one of the city’s most important cultural assets, vital to a modern, dynamic and pluralistic Jerusalem, empowering community, advancing education, and contributing to the economy and to tourism by positioning Jerusalem as a national and international cultural destination.
The Festival is held at the Jerusalem Theatre as well as several other locations and site-specific spaces throughout the city and, on occasion in other parts of the country as well. The Israel Festival offers a significant platform for cross-cultural encounter and communication by hosting eminent artists from around the globe and involving both established and emerging Israeli artists.
The new edition of the Israel Festival will continue to expand on the Festival’s well-established reputation, uncompromising quality, and prestige while introducing a cutting-edge and compelling cross-disciplinary artistic program, appealing to both the festival’s traditional audience as well as to new, younger crowds, professionals, students, and other groups.
