About This Project

AfrikaBurn 2026 — Tankwa, South Africa

Date: To Be Announced (TBA) 2026
Location: Tankwa Karoo, Northern Cape Province, South Africa

AfrikaBurn is the breathtaking expression of creativity, community, and radical self-expression that happens once a year in the remote Tankwa Karoo. Originating in 2007 on a private farm called Stonehenge near Tankwa Karoo National Park, this festival brings together a vibrant community of volunteers and participants who build a temporary city filled with art, theme camps, costumes, music, and unforgettable performances.

For veterans, words are not needed. For newcomers, the experience defies simple explanation. Like its inspiration Burning Man, AfrikaBurn invites intentional participation amid a stark, otherworldly landscape that fosters unity, imagination, and human connection.

The festival coincides with South Africa’s May Day holiday and offers a spirit of radical creativity and idealism. The iconic main sculpture, “The San Clan,” evokes ancient San rock art, symbolizing the deep sense of community present throughout the event. The layout of Tankwa Town, with its central playa and semicircle of camps, mirrors the ethos of participant-driven society.

Expect to see dancing, cartwheeling, art installations, and passionate celebration of life everywhere you look. AfrikaBurn remains intimate yet growing, always focused on sustainability and the nurturing of the human spirit through shared experience.

The 2026 theme encourages attendees to reflect on their role in defining the culture and identity of Tankwa Town, embodying the spirit of community co-creation. As Larry Harvey famously said about Burning Man’s early days, “…no one asked what it was, what its significance was or what it meant, the reason being, because it was us.”
