Charming Montreal becomes even more magical in winter – the perfect stage for a celebration of one of history’s great composers. Ensembles, orchestras, choirs and solo musicians come from across the globe for this elegant event, which kicks off on 12 November with an even more elegant gala evening.

The Bach-Académie de Montréal is a non-profit organization founded in Montreal, a city well-known for its sophisticated culture and cultivated artistic communities. As a testament to the city’s unique appreciation of classical and baroque music and its special sensitivity to virtuosic artistry, the Bach-Académie de Montréal organizes a music Festival featuring outstanding Canadian ensembles alongside international artists.

Founded in 2005 by Alexandra Scheibler, the Festival Bach Montréal is North America’s premier destination for the timeless musical genius of Johann Sebastian Bach and the cultural legacy he inspired. Each year, in November and December, Festival Bach Montréal presents some thirty events (recitals, concerts, open rehearsals, discussions, children’s events, etc.) over a three-week period, bringing together more than 20,000 local and international festival-goers. The Festival Bach Montréal takes place across a dozen different venues in the city, including the Maison symphonique, the Bourgie Hall of the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Saint Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal, and many churches in Montreal. The artists that have been welcomed to the festival over the years include some of the biggest names on the international classical music scene as well as young talents from across Canada and abroad. Ton Koopman and Julie Payette have been in turn patron and honorary patron of the festival respectively.

Arion Baroque Orchestra, Studio de musique ancienne de Montréal, Pallade Musica, Ensemble Masque, Les Violons du Roy,Suzie LeBlanc, Clavecin en concert, Orchestre symphonique de Montréal with Kent Nagano, the Orchestre Métropolitain conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and many more outstanding ensembles from Québec have participated actively in the festival over the years.
A few highlights from past seasons are concerts with the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, the Belgian ensemble Il Gardellino and The English Concert with David Daniels, the Thomanerchor (Bach’s very own choir), Collegium Vocale Gent conducted by Philippe Herreweghe, Freiburger Barockorchester,Concerto Köln, the ensemble Café Zimmermann with Benoît Arnould, the Italian ensembles La Risonanza, Bach Collegium Japan with Masaaki Suzuki, the vocal ensembles Vox Luminis and Ensemble Jacques Moderne, I Musici di Roma, Europa Galante with Fabio Biondi.

At the event, the pianists Evgeni Koroliov, Martin Stadtfeld, Zhu Xiao-Mei, Sergei Babayan, Alexandre Tharaud, and Jeremy Denk performed The Goldberg Variations, as did the harpsichordist Léon Berben, the harpist Catrin Finch, and the trio of Axel Strauss, Anna Burden, and Victor Fournelle-Blain. Great cellists Yo-Yo Ma, Isang Enders, and Jean-Guihen Queyras have all performed Bach’s Solo Cello Suites, as have violinists Isabelle Faust and Antje Weithaas, who have performed his Sonatas and Partitas. In more recent years, the performance of young Polish countertenor Jakub Józef Orliski with Quebec’s own L’Harmonie des Saisons has also stood out.

Some of this year’s upcoming concerts include the Night of choirs, Luc Beauséjour’s harpsichord, the London Handel players, Filippo Gorini’s piano, Masaaki Suzuki and the Orchestre & Chœur, Les violons du Roy Nicolas Ellis dir, the Orchestre Symponique de Montreal Leonardo Garcia Alarcon dir, Thomas Dunford’ lute and the Organ concert.
